Certainly adding it to your skin file is a great way to do it. However, for those who are "less advanced" including it in the Text/HTML is a great solution.

Also... Ifinity has a great, free module for Google Analytics. http://www.ifinity.com.au/Products/Google_Analytics_Script_Module/ It can exclude administrator traffic, as to not skew your stats.

Yep, good tips.
Here are some common issues I've encountered in case you bump into them too:

If you've installed as stated above, but google says it is not receiving data, go back to the page you installed analytics on - either log out or make sure you're in "view" mode - then check source code. ctrl+f to look for analytics.

If you can't find it, you did something wrong. probably set visibility to none, or admin or something like that. Or, you entered the script in the non-text window.

If you do find it, check and see if there are any
tags within the script. If they're there, login and edit the script in text mode, removing all the break tags. update, view and you should be golden.

In Rare instances, usually when there is an excessive amount of Javascript code elsewhere on the page, your analytics may not get picked up no matter what you do. In that case, you can edit the page settings and insert the code within the head tag area. Unfortunately you'll have to do that on every page.

I agree with Stuart though. If you can add it to the skin file, you're much better off. You want the analytics to load quickly so you can get the best data possible.
